Here at Glenn Clark Radio, we always reflect on Baltimore Ravens games in a more jovial manner. In retrospect, we like to choose five players on the team who — depending on the outcome of the game — deserve a Pat On The Ass or Slap To The Helmet.
Of course with the regular season finale wrapping up yesterday in Cincinnati, we decided it’s time to dish out some Pats and Slaps for the entire season.
The rules are simple: pick two players on defense, two players on offense, and one “wild card” (an offensive player, defensive player, special teamer or coach) who stuck out from the pack.
They will count down in sequential order before we name the ultimate prizes, the most player (or coach…) most deserving of Slaps and our theoretical ‘Ravens MVP’ on the Pats side
We’ll start with Carson ‘Tri-Weekly,’ Glenn and Griffin’s season-long Slaps before dishing out some season-long Pats. Without further adieu:
Glenn’s 2022 Regular Season Slaps to the Helmet:
5. WR James Proche
It wasn’t reasonable to expect him to step up (considering he was a sixth round pick) but the Ravens really could have used it.
4. WR Demarcus Robinson
Essentially, as I made this list I determined that it was the receiver position that was most deserving of criticism so I chose the two players for whom criticism was most reasonable.
3. CB Marcus Peters
We can argue that the Ravens are still better with Peters on the field but, like, are we sure? It was rough before he went out.
2. OC Greg Roman
There’s not a whole lot left to say at this point.
1. EDGE Odafe Oweh
There was no player that the Ravens needed to step up more and who we could reasonably expect should step up more that failed to do so.
Griffin’s 2022 Regular Season Slaps to the Helmet:
5. WR Demarcus Robinson
Really like Glenn’s Proche pick for this spot but I’m going Robinson. Bad football player.
4. LB Patrick Queen
Too many times this season when I’m caught saying, what are you doing? He’d be higher but Roquan’s elite-ness saved him. Every week, he proves that he was not worth a first round pick.
3. QB Tyler Huntley
He’s a terrible quarterback. I recognize there’s a lot of external factors, but the last six weeks of Ravens football have been unwatchable and it’s largely due to the QB play.
2. EDGE Odafe Oweh
What a terrible first round pick, there’s been zero production.
1. OC Greg Roman
Impressive really, going from the where this team was in 2019, to whatever this is.
Carson’s 2022 Regular Season Slaps to the Helmet:
5. QB Tyler Huntley
Put in a tough situation, but he played terribly when called upon. Two TDs to three INTs and three fumbles in six games, 77.2 rating.
4. WR Demarcus Robinson
Had low expectations, but he still disappointed: dropped passes, led receivers and tight ends into fumbles.
3. EDGE Odafe Oweh
Didn’t make any strides this year, 3 sacks all season.
2. CB Marcus Peters
One pick all year, consistently gets beat in coverage.
1. OC Greg Roman
Awful play-calling. The situation against the Browns, Week 18 vs Bengals and passing it when backed up down 10 with 25 seconds left in half, really hurt the team.
Now for our Pats on the Ass, the good players.
Glenn’s 2022 Regular Season Pats on the Ass:
5. RB J.K. Dobbins
It was tough to leave Tyler Linderbaum off the list but he struggled just a little bit at the start of the season and I really thought Dobbins was so good when he returned that he needed to be recognized.
4. OL Ronnie Stanley
It’s tough to put so many guys on the list who didn’t play the whole season but damn it’s hard to ignore the disparity between the Ravens with Ronnie Stanley and the Ravens without him.
3. OL Kevin Zeitler
I don’t really care who makes the Pro Bowl but I was a little bummed he didn’t get a nod.
2. CB Marlon Humphrey
The most consistent player from Week 1 to Week 18.
1. LB Roquan Smith (Team MVP)
I had high expectations when I went to see the film “Superbad” in a movie theater in 2007. When we walked out, my friend Nate said “are we really thinking about how special what we just watched was?”
That’s kinda how I’ve felt about Roquan Smith.
Griffin’s 2022 Regular Season Pats on the Ass:
5. TE Mark Andrews
He’s still one of the best at his position and it even though it didn’t feel like it this year, when you’re the best player on the field it’s easy to take you away. Still the leading receiver.
4. K Justin Tucker
If there was ever a year to leave him off the list, it would be this year just from looking at his numbers and going 37/43 (86%). But, we won 4 games by < 3 points and was the only consistent form of offense for the final 6 games.
3. LB Roquan Smith
What a jolt. As soon as he arrived, it was felt and took the defense to another level.
2. CB Marlon Humphrey
Played like an all-pro, he’s one of my favorite players on and off the field.
1. QB Lamar Jackson (Team MVP)
The impact he has is clear, Don’t let him go Ravens.
Carson’s 2022 Regular Season Pats on the Ass:
5. TE Mark Andrews
Not a stellar season, but was far and away our leader in receiving yards and receiving TDs.
4. S Marcus Williams
Really helped a secondary that was terrible last year. Led team in INTs and is tied for 11th in the league despite missing time.
3. QB Lamar Jackson
Missed time and didn’t look unstoppable, but we saw what happened when he wasn’t on the field, plus, he was the leading rusher.
2. C Tyler Linderbaum
Made a really nice impact, might be a boring pick, but he’s going to be a rock for years to come.
1. LB Roquan Smith (Team MVP)
Late arrival, but I don’t care, he changed the defense entirely, simple as that.
