Glenn and Griffin continue our Monday tradition for the 2024 baseball season Monday on GCR with ‘Three Up and Three Down’ where we rank the best and worst Orioles performers of the week, much like how we do with Pats on the Ass and Slaps to the Helmet during football season after Ravens games. The guys will each name three players, three trending up, three trending down, based on how they did for that week specifically–a short week due to the All-Star break but the birds take two of three down in Texas leaving for more positive than negative, but those negatives certainly magnified in the loss.
Three Up And Three Down is presented by Costas Inn. Just by sharing your own Three Up And Three Down Orioles each Monday, you can be randomly selected to win a $50 gift card to Costas Inn.
Without further adieu:
Glenn’s Three Up:
3. RP Keegan Akin
It feels like we should probably recognize that Akin made three scoreless appearances (3.1 innings) while allowing just one hit and not walking anyone. That really seems noteworthy.
2. 1B Ryan Mountcastle
There’s recency bias involved because he had a massive 4RBI game Sunday but 7/18 with 7RBI matters and his big game was one of only two wins so yeah, he’s here.
1. OF Colton Cowser
The most (only) pleasant story of the second half. He’s back back.
Griffin’s Three Up:
3. SP Corbin Burnes
The game should be called “Two Up + Corbin Burnes and Three Down”
2. 1B Ryan Mountcastle
Don’t let Mounty get hot…multi-hit games, hitting both LHP and RHP, and hits with RISP.
1. OF Colton Cowser
He’s been the best source of offensive production when the rest of the lineup has seemingly dried up. And the best part is,I can finally say moo again without Glenn looking at me weird.
Glenn’s Three Down:
3. 3B Ramon Urias
Gunnar should probably be on the list this week. But Urias’ worst moment was the rock bottom moment of the week and he went 1/11 with six strikeouts to boot.
2. SP Albert Suarez
So they still need a fifth starter if no one else is acquired at the deadline but it’s hard to imagine Suarez getting more chances. His Tuesday start in Miami (six earned runs on eight hits and a walk over just two innings) was an abomination. On Sunday he was spotted a six run lead and still couldn’t manage to get through the fifth inning against the Padres.
1. CL Craig Kimbrel
You see, if you pitch him when the porridge is JUST RIGHT, then he’ll be fine. If he got enough sleep. But not too much sleep. If he ate a good breakfast. But not TOO good of a breakfast. Then he’ll be just fine.
Griffin’s Three Down:
3. Closer Craig Kimbrel
Too much rest? Too little rest? Who cares, this isn’t acceptable from a Closer on one of the best teams in baseball.
2. SP Albert Suarez
So many good options this week, but obviously Big Al (probably the last time I call him that) was going to be on my list one way or another. For the record, I thought they should’ve pulled him after four scoreless innings yesterday.
1. SS Gunnar Henderson
He deserves to have a bad week, but it was a BAD week, both at the plate and defensively, yet still managed to turn in a couple web gems while in the field.
As a bonus this week, Grant DeVivo was in for Griffin Monday and shared his own Three Up And Three Down for the week.
