Glenn and Griffin debuted a new segment Monday on GCR, ‘Three Up and Three Down’, we’ll do it each week and rank the best and worst Orioles performers of the week, much like how we do with ‘Pats on the Ass’ and ‘Slaps to the Helmet’ during football season after Ravens games. The guys will each name three players, three trending up, three trending down, based on how they did for that week specifically. Without further adieu:
Glenn’s Three-Up:
3. SS Gunnar Henderson
The 4-10 start with a triple and a home run is great, but the three walks have weirdly excited me just as much.
2. SP Grayson Rodriguez
There won’t be many weeks where you can pitch like that and not be #1 on the list.
1. SP Corbin Burnes
I mean, holy sh*t. It’s still hard to fully articulate just how dominant that was and in that atmosphere. Doing that on Opening Day and whipping this fanbase into that type of frenzy, that’s one of the most memorable individual performances in modern Orioles history.
Griffin’s Three-Up:
3. RF Anthony Santander
I was very intrigued about Tony’s situation coming into the season, would he be a guy that gets traded mid-season? Two HRs and 7 RBI reminded me that this guy is just too damn important to the lineup, he’ll be too good to move on from. What a start.
2. SS Gunnar Henderson
Kid is superstar, casually coming up short of a Cycle again, and then making the defensive web-gem of the year so far at short yesterday. What a joy it’s going to be to watch this 22-year-old kid be the table setter this season.
1. SP Corbin Burnes
As advertised.
Glenn’s Three-Down:
3. RP Dillton Tate
He bounced back nicely in his second appearance, but what we saw on Opening Day was concerning considering how badly the Orioles need him to get back to 2022 form with the rest of the questions we have about the bullpen.
2. SP Tyler Wells
Yes, he settled down nicely after the first two innings. But the first two innings proved to be where the only loss on the season so far was decided.
1. 3B Ramon Urias
The snag he made on the line drive Saturday was impressive. But he’s under a brighter spotlight because he appears to have the roster spot many of us think should belong to Jackson Holliday.
Griffin’s Three-Down:
3. 2B? Jorge Mateo
Honestly was pretty impressed with him offensively, game-changing speed is still there, the legend of March/April Mateo lives on, but already a couple mistakes at second base, and it’s magnified because I believe that Jackson Holliday should be in Baltimore already.
2. RP Dillon Tate
Can’t really hold much against a guy coming into a 10-run game on Opening Day, but his first appearance wasn’t encouraging, especially considering the organization basically said he’s their bullpen reinforcement.
1. 3B Ramon Urias
Similar explanation to Jorge Mateo landing on this list, Jackson Holliday should be here, probably taking this guy’s roster spot. He didn’t record a hit.
