Griffin convinced Glenn to revive the segment last season after a hiatus from the program for a few years, and it’s relatively simple how it works: on Tuesdays following Sunday’s game, we will sit down and map out the Five Plays That Told The Story Of Sunday’s Game.
It’s as simple as it sounds, if the Ravens lose, we’ll pick the five plays that we perceived embodied the loss, not all necessarily scoring plays, sometimes no scoring plays. And of course on the inverse, when the Ravens win, the five plays that most embodied the win.
While the exercise seems trite, we are here to serve you, here’s the Five Plays That Told The Story of a 44-10 loss to the Texans:
Glenn’s Five Plays That Told The Story of Sunday’s Game:
5. 0:02 – 2nd (1st & 10 at HOU 37) T. Loop 55 yard field goal is No Good, Wide Right, Center-N. Moore, Holder-J. Stout.
The game was over at this point but MAYBE there was some momentum to be gained from getting points at the half when you had done it in 28 seconds.
4. 2:43 – 1st (3rd & 4 at HOU 10) (Shotgun) C. Rush pass short left to Z. Flowers to HST 9 for 1 yard (H. To’oTo’o; K. Lassiter).
This set up the decision to kick the field instead of going for it and the entire sequence was nonsensical.
3. 9:33 – 2nd (4th & 29 at BAL 6) J. Stout punts 35 yards to BLT 41, Center-N. Moore, downed by BLT-S. Kane
Obviously we know this followed up what would have been a 62 yard punt. Still, no excuses for Stout to have shanked the next.
2. 10:30 – 2nd (3rd & 8 at BAL 27) (Shotgun) C. Rush sacked at BLT 11 for -16 yards (M. Edwards)
This set up the punt sequence. Inexcusable for Cooper Rush to be running backwards ever. You’re not making anything happen.
1. 8:01 – 2nd (3rd & 3 at BAL 34) (Shotgun) C. Stroud scrambles right guard pushed ob at BLT 4 for 30 yards (T. Buchanan)
This truly just felt like the moment when the Texans broke the Ravens. There was a chance to get off the field, at least force a long field goal attempt. Instead, you were bullied.
Griffin’s Five Plays That Told The Story of Sunday’s Game:
5. 1-yd Run 5:31 – 2nd (Shotgun) K.Mitchell right guard to BLT 32 for 1 yard (D.Horton; A.Al-Shaair). 1st & 15 at BAL 31
How tone deaf is this play? Derrick Henry doesn’t touch the football between the opening drive and the second drive of the 3rd quarter when you’re down 31-3. You’ve got the right side of the line missing blocks, handing it off to Keaton Mitchell and leaving every single linebacker unblocked, on purpose. This play pisses me off. What is the plan?
4. Interception 12:57 – 3rd C.Rush pass short right intended for D.Henry INTERCEPTED by J.Pitre at BLT 46. J.Pitre to BLT 38 for 8 yards (D.Henry).1st & 10 at BAL 46
I get it, the game was pretty much over already but this absolutely sealed the deal, turnovers, man. Plus you’ve run five plays in the second half and this is the first one to get Henry involved? On a pass??
3. Field Goal Good 1:58 – 1st T.Loop 27 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-N.Moore, Holder-J.Stout. 4th & 3 at HOU 9
Glenn doesn’t put decisions on his list, I do. I hate the short pass to Zay on 3rd down and hate the cowardly kick even more.
2. Field Goal Missed 0:02 – 2nd T.Loop 55 yard field goal is No Good, Wide Right, Center-N.Moore, Holder-J.Stout. 1st & 10 at HOU 37
You were actually moving the ball a little bit and about to grab some points before half, a chance to double-dip out of of halftime. Nope.
1. Sack 10:30 – 2nd (Shotgun) C.Rush sacked at BLT 11 for -16 yards (M.Edwards). 3rd & 8 at BAL 27
This sequence told the whole story. Cooper Rush, doing whatever that was, and self-inflicted wounds all day… poor blocking, penalties, shooting themselves in the foot.
