Griffin convinced Glenn to revive the segment last season after a hiatus from the program for a few years, and it’s relatively simple how it works: on Tuesdays following Sunday’s game, we will sit down and map out the Five Plays That Told The Story Of Sunday’s Game.
It’s as simple as it sounds, if the Ravens lose, we’ll pick the five plays that we perceived embodied the loss, not all necessarily scoring plays, sometimes no scoring plays. And of course on the inverse, when the Ravens win, the five plays that most embodied the win.
The Ravens are back below .500, sitting at 7-8 and needing loads of assistance to keep their playoff dreams alive. As we do every Tuesday, Glenn and Griffin recap the most recent Ravens game, this time we’ll go over the Five Plays That Told The Story of Sunday Night’s game–a 28-24 loss to the New England Patriots–according Glenn Clark and Griffin Bass:
Glenn’s Five Plays That Told The Story of Sunday’s Game:
5. 0:19 – 2nd (1st & 10 at BAL 32) (Shotgun) T. Huntley pass short middle to M. Andrews to BLT 40 for 8 yards. Penalty on NE-J. Gibbens, Roughing the Passer, offsetting, enforced at BLT 32 – No Play. Penalty on BLT-M. Andrews, Illegal Forward Pass, offsetting.
I get it. We can kind of laugh about it because “no harm, no foul.” But the reality is that the Ravens would have had the ball at the New England 45 with 11 seconds and two timeouts. I could have switched this out for Tyler Loop’s miss but I realize 56 isn’t a gimme it’s just specifically that you can’t come up short from 56.
4. 12:47 – 2nd (3rd & 13 at BAL 47) (Shotgun) D. Maye pass deep middle to M. Hollins to BLT 27 for 20 yards (M. Humphrey).
As bad as the fumble was, this was a golden opportunity to get off the field with AT WORST a long field goal attempt. Alas.
3. 3:02 – 4th (4th & 2 at BAL 48) D. Maye pass short left to S. Diggs pushed ob at BLT 27 for 21 yards (M. Starks).
It’s a combination of two plays, really. The play before, Nate Wiggins jumped the route and dropped an interception. Then Ar’Darius Washington jumped the route but missed the ball, allowing the conversion.
2. 1:51 – 1st (2nd & 4 at NE 37) (Shotgun) D. Henry right tackle to NE 32 for 5 yards (J. Hawkins; C. Davis). FUMBLES (J. Hawkins), RECOVERED by NE-C. Woodson at NE 32.
Everything was going brilliantly until this moment. Brilliantly!
1. 1:57 – 4th (2nd & 15 at BAL 27) (Shotgun) T. Huntley pass short middle to Z. Flowers to BLT 32 for 5 yards (K. Chaisson). FUMBLES (K. Chaisson), RECOVERED by NE-M. Jones at BLT 36.
It’s fair to say Tyler Huntley was never leading them on a game winning TD drive. But they had all of the time they could possibly need. Sigh.
Griffin’s Five Plays That Told The Story of Sunday’s Game:
5. 0-yd Run. 7:22 – 4th (Shotgun) K.Mitchell right end to BLT 43 for no gain (C.Durden; J.Gibbens). 1st & 10 at BAL 43
Just doesn’t make any sense. You get lucky, LUCKY and pick up a first down after a big-time throw from Snoop to DHop for a first down and you have a chance to right your wrong and put Derrick Henry back in the game. They don’t. Play is blown up and it’s the beginning of the end as the drive stalls with almost no time taken off clock, allowing the Pats to easily score again.
4. Sack. 12:08 – 3rd (Shotgun) T.Huntley sacked at NE 47 for -7 yards (A.Jennings). 2nd & 11 at NE 40
Horrible sack. Defense gets a stop, has a chance to re-claim the lead on a FG at minimum and this proved to knock the Ravens out of Tyler Loop’s alleged field goal range.
3. Fumble Recovery. 1:57 – 4th (Shotgun) T.Huntley pass short middle to Z.Flowers to BLT 32 for 5 yards (K.Chaisson). FUMBLES (K.Chaisson), RECOVERED by NE-M.Jones at BLT 36. 2nd & 15 at BAL 27
Somehow, miraculously, The Ravens were still in the game at this point. It’s only #3 for me because I am in the camp of, I don’t believe Tyler Huntley can go down and win this game right now.
2. 21-yd Pass. 3:02 – 4th (Shotgun) D.Maye pass short left to S.Diggs pushed ob at BLT 27 for 21 yards (M.Starks). 4th & 2 at BAL 48
This proved to be the game in my opinion. Once the defense couldn’t get off the field, it was over.
1. Fumble Recovery. 1:51 – 1st (Shotgun) D.Henry right tackle to NE 32 for 5 yards (J.Hawkins; C.Davis). FUMBLES (J.Hawkins), RECOVERED by NE-C.Woodson at NE 32. 2nd & 4 at NE 37
Hard not to continue to come back to this play. The Ravens are putting together two impressive drives offensively and were going to go up 14-0. Alas.
