Griffin convinced Glenn to revive the segment last season after a hiatus from the program for a few years, and it’s relatively simple how it works: on Tuesdays following Sunday’s game, we will sit down and map out the Five Plays That Told The Story Of Sunday’s Game.
It’s as simple as it sounds, if the Ravens lose, we’ll pick the five plays that we perceived embodied the loss, not all necessarily scoring plays, sometimes no scoring plays. And of course on the inverse, when the Ravens win, the five plays that most embodied the win.
That’s three in a row for your Baltimore Ravens, who are slowly but surely starting to look like the Baltimore Ravens again, this time in a 27-19 win on the road in Minnesota, seizing control in the second half after trailing entering halftime. Here are the Five Plays That Told The Story of the game according Glenn Clark and Griffin Bass:
Glenn’s Five Plays That Told The Story of Sunday’s Game:
5. 7:19 – 4th (4th & 3 at BLT 13) (Shotgun) J. McCarthy pass incomplete short right to J. Jefferson (N. Wiggins).
Yes, the Vikings ultimately got the ball back in a one score game. But getting all the way to the 13 only to come up short felt devastating and put them dramatically being the eight ball.
4. 5:50 – 3rd (4th & 2 at BAL 46) (Shotgun) J. McCarthy pass incomplete short middle to J. Addison (C. Awuzie). PENALTY on MIN-A. Thielen, Illegal Blindside Block, 15 yards, enforced at BLT 46.
The Ravens were ultimately unable to cash in on the tremendous field position they got out of this stop but the momentum had clearly shifted to the Ravens’ side defensively.
3. 3:39 – 1st (2nd & 7 at MIN 32) (Shotgun) A. Jones right guard to MIN 27 for -5 yards (M. Green).
Perhaps you’ve forgotten that the Ravens got off to a dreadful defensive start, allowing the Vikings to go 86 yards on 7 plays for a touchdown on their first drive. This was the first actual defensive play they made in the game, got the Vikings behind the sticks and allowed them the chance to come to life.
2. 12:55 – 3rd (3rd & 1 at 50) J. McCarthy pass deep middle intended for J. Jefferson INTERCEPTED by M. Humphrey at BLT 2. M. Humphrey ran ob at BLT 29 for 27 yards (D. Jackson; A. Jones)
The Vikings had the lead at the half and the ball to start the second half. They almost certainly called this play with the expectation they could go for it on 4th down after but the result was devastating for a team that had all of the momentum.
1. 10:19 – 3rd (Kickoff) T. Loop kicks 65 yards from BLT 35 to MIN 0. M. Price to MIN 23 for 23 yards (K. Jackson, T. Simpson). FUMBLES (K. Jackson), RECOVERED by BLT-K. Jackson at MIN 23.
I hope my kids will be willing to spring me from the home to take me to Keondre Jackson’s Ring of Honor induction ceremony.
Griffin’s Five Plays That Told The Story of Sunday’s Game:
5. Incompletion 7:26 – 4th (Shotgun) J.McCarthy pass incomplete short middle to J.Addison (J.Jenkins). 3rd & 3 at BAL 13
Vikings would turn it over on downs next play because “Nine” missed his receiver, another story of the game. But this was the real story, the Ravens getting pressure and batting a pass, and it being a different guy every time, John Jenkins with the play here.
4. Incompletion 0:52 – 4th (No Huddle, Shotgun) J.McCarthy pass incomplete deep right to J.Nailor [D.Jones]. 2nd & 6 at MIN 38
Dre’mont Jones pressure on final drive. Everyone on the defense is gassed because Minnesota is in 2-minute. And somehow, a different guy, Jones this time comes up and forces the issue. Giving the defense a much need breather on the final drive that they of course would get a stop on to win the game.
3. 7-yd Run 11:30 – 4th (Shotgun) L.Jackson left end to MIN 2 for 7 yards (I.Rodgers). 3rd & 2 at MIN 9
Lamar outside run on 3rd down, this was the Derrick Henry drive and was the only harrowing 3rd down the faced on the drive. Love this play, with Henry + Stanley lead blocking.
2. Interception 12:55 – 3rd J.McCarthy pass deep middle intended for J.Jefferson INTERCEPTED by M.Humphrey at BLT 2. M.Humphrey ran ob at BLT 29 for 27 yards (D.Jackson; A.Jones). 3rd & 1 at 50
I mean, the Vikings were driving coming out of halftime. Not entirely sure why they took a deep shot like this? I mean if you have Jefferson 1-on-1, so I guess sure. Either way, this was a gimme and it needed to be made. Led to the Ravens taking the lead and never relinquishing.
1. Kickoff 10:19 – 3rd T.Loop kicks 65 yards from BLT 35 to MIN 0. M.Price to MIN 23 for 23 yards (K.Jackson; T.Simpson). FUMBLES (K.Jackson), RECOVERED by BLT-K.Jackson at MIN 23.
Huge play, obviously. Only up 12-10 at this point, and it kind of felt like a failure to only come away with a field goal on the last drive after getting stopped at the goal line.
