Griffin convinced Glenn to revive the segment last season after a hiatus from the program for a few years, and it’s relatively simple how it works: on Tuesdays following Sunday’s game, we will sit down and map out the Five Plays That Told The Story Of Sunday’s Game.
It’s as simple as it sounds, if the Ravens lose, we’ll pick the five plays that we perceived embodied the loss, not all necessarily scoring plays, sometimes no scoring plays. And of course on the inverse, when the Ravens win, the five plays that most embodied the win.
The Ravens got dominated Monday night vs the Detroit Lions, in a fashion that we don’t often see in Baltimore, you know what this is, here is how Glenn and Griffin saw the biggest plays of the game–they will count down in sequential order of the five plays they believed to tell the story of Monday’s game.
Glenn’s Five Plays That Told The Story of Sunday’s Game:
5. 10:27 – 1st (4th & 3 at BAL 11) J. Goff pass short right to A. St. Brown to BLT 4 for 7 yards (K. Hamilton).
I didn’t have room to get the Ravens’ own 4th down failure on the list but you’re going to sense a theme here. This set the tone for one of the major storylines of the game, the Ravens’ inability to get off the field defensively. The Lions capitalized with a touchdown two plays later and were on their way.
4. 14:55 – 4th (4th & 1 at BAL 4) J. Gibbs right end for 4 yards, TOUCHDOWN. J. Bates extra point is GOOD, Center-H. Hatten, Holder-J. Fox.
Not only was it another 4th down conversion, it was the score they put the Lions ahead for good.
3. 1:56 – 4th (4th & 2 at DET 49) J. Goff pass deep right to A. St. Brown to BLT 31 for 20 yards (M. Humphrey). Penalty on BLT-M. Humphrey, Defensive Holding, declined.
Obviously this one was the final nail in the coffin.
2. 8:31 – 4th (1st & 10 at BAL 21) (Shotgun) D. Henry up the middle to BLT 21 for no gain (A. Hutchinson). FUMBLES (A. Hutchinson), touched at BLT 22, RECOVERED by DET-D. Reed at BLT 19. D. Reed to BLT 16 for 3 yards (L. Jackson).
For everything that had gone wrong, there was still reason to believe that your team had Lamar Jackson, so they were going to figure out a way to win. Right up until this.
1. 2:53 – 3rd (2nd & 10 at DET 15) D. Montgomery right guard to BLT 13 for 72 yards (M. Humphrey)
The Ravens had recovered from the 18 play, 98 yard, 11 minute drive in the second quarter. But it truly feels like they never recovered from this.
Griffin’s Five Plays That Told The Story of Sunday’s Game:
5. 7-yd Pass, 10:27 – 1st: (Shotgun) J.Goff pass short right to A.St. Brown to BLT 4 for 7 yards (K.Hamilton). 4th & 3 at BAL 11
4th down conversion #1 for Detroit on the opening drive. Set the tone for the entirety of the game. Dan Campbell and the Lions weren’t going to back down no matter what.
4. 72-yd Run, 2:53 – 3rd: D.Montgomery right guard to BLT 13 for 72 yards (M.Humphrey). 2nd & 10 at DET 15
Pretty solid summary of the game: The Ravens were dominated at the line of scrimmage. None more evident than on this play which help progress the Lions second 95+ yard drive. Travis Jones literally goes flailing at Montgomery, not even close to a tackle. My #6 this week would’ve been the 4th & Goal they didn’t get a stop on to end this drive. Absolutely pathetic.
3. 20-yd Pass, 1:56 – 4th: J.Goff pass deep right to A.St. Brown to BLT 31 for 20 yards (M.Humphrey).Penalty on BLT-M.Humphrey, Defensive Holding, declined. 4th & 2 at DET 49
The third 4th down conversion from Detroit. Credit the defense for forcing a 4th down, I guess. But the game was officially over after this.
2. Punt 4:32 – 4th: J.Stout punts 38 yards to DET 30, Center-N.Moore, out of bounds. 4th & 9 at BAL 32
The Ravens punting it back. It being a poor punt from Stout doesn’t even matter honestly, even if he bombed one, the Lions proved they could score from inside their own 5 twice already. This was a horrible, cowardice decision.
1. Fumble Recovery, 8:31 – 4th: (Shotgun) D.Henry up the middle to BLT 21 for no gain (A.Hutchinson). FUMBLES (A.Hutchinson), touched at BLT 22, RECOVERED by DET-D.Reed at BLT 19. D.Reed to BLT 16 for 3 yards (L.Jackson). 1st & 10 at BAL 21
Just dude. Come on. Down by four, the defense had just gotten a stop. Can’t think of a worse possible time for this to happen.
