It’s been a few years now, but we’ve decided to bring it back, Griffin got sick of Glenn mentioning this segment “that we used to do” so the guys revived it entirely. On Tuesdays following Sunday’s game, we will sit down and map out the Five Plays That Told The Story Of Sunday’s Game.
It’s as simple as it sounds, if the Ravens lose, we’ll pick the five plays that we perceived embodied the loss, not all necessarily scoring plays, sometimes no scoring plays. And of course on the inverse, when the Ravens win, the five plays that most embodied the win.
The Ravens fall to 8-5 on the season after their loss to the Eagles Sunday evening. Griffin and Glenn will both count down in sequential order of the five plays they believed to tell the story of Sunday’s loss.
Glenn’s Five Plays That Told The Story of Sunday’s Game:
5. 4th & 8 at BAL 42 (6:18 – 4th) (Shotgun) L. Jackson pass incomplete deep middle to Z. Flowers (T. McCollum)
The last hurrah but also a reflection of one of the storylines we’ve talked about in losses-is there room for Lamar Jackson to run that he’s not taking? This one felt forced downfield.
4. 4th & 7 at PHI 35 (1:26 – 3rd) J. Tucker 53 yard field goal is No Good, Wide Right, Center-N. Moore, Holder-J. Stout
4 & 3 (and then 2 & 1) are obviously pairs. The missed kicks were just a massive part of the storyline. This one clinched the “you dominated the third quarter and had nothing to show for it” storyline too.
3. 3rd & 7 at PHI 35 (1:34 – 3rd) (Shotgun) L. Jackson pass incomplete deep left to N. Agholor (A. Maddox)
And this was the play that lead up to that miss and I didn’t like the call given Tucker’s struggles. Still, Agholor had a chance to make the play and set them up on the doorstep and he didn’t. Bad all around.
2. 4th & 19 at PHI 29 (10:00 – 3rd) J. Tucker 47 yard field goal is No Good, Wide Left, Center-N. Moore, Holder-J. Stout
After Tucker made a 50 yarder late in the second quarter, you wanted to believe things were right. Then this happened and it was all downhill from here.
1. 3rd & 5 at PHI 15 (10:43 – 3rd) (Shotgun) L. Jackson sacked at PHI 29 for -14 yards (sack split by Z. Baun and J. Hunt)
And this tells multiple stories as well. 3rd & 5 is extremely manageable on a drive that appeared as though would get the Ravens back in the game. To reach the red zone and not score is disastrous. Taking a sack like that given Justin Tucker’s struggles is unacceptable. And it also reflects the story of how the Ravens’ Offensive Line was a mess for the whole game.
Griffin’s Five Plays That Told The Story of Sunday’s Game:
5. 3rd & 7 at PHI 35 (1:34 – 3rd) (Shotgun) L.Jackson pass incomplete deep left to N.Agholor (A.Maddox).
We knew the kicker was a problem at this point, so my issue with the play-call here. The crazy thing is it almost worked, great throw from Lamar, Agholor just couldn’t reel it in. Point being, we have to change the calculus here: make it a shorter kick or set up a shorter 4th down try.
4. 4th & 8 at BAL 42 (6:18 – 4th) (Shotgun) L.Jackson pass incomplete deep middle to Z.Flowers (T.McCollum).
This was the game obviously. Solid summary of a spot where Lamar probably could’ve ran and picked up the 8 yards, and the all-day struggle of being unable to get Zay Flowers the football.
3. 3rd & 5 at PHI 15 (10:43 – 3rd) (Shotgun) L.Jackson sacked at PHI 29 for -14 yards (sack split by Z.Baun and J.Hunt).
First drive out of halftime, moving the ball extremely well. Then the story of the day, the offensive line getting bullied, Lamar had a chance to get rid of the ball but insteads turns into a 15 yard sack. Tucker of course misses the ensuing 47-yarder. Field goal issues, offensive line struggles, all in one.
2. 3rd & 7 at PHI 41 (9:52 – 4th) (Shotgun) J.Hurts pass short left to D.Goedert to 50 for 9 yards (B.Stephens).
A Massive point in the game, still very much in balance with the Eagles only up by two at this point, and when it mattered most, the Ravens couldn’t get any pass rush, and three plays later Saquon scores. Took the air out of the ball, especially after the Ravens actually got pressure and forced Jalen Hurts to throw it away (intentional grounding?) on the play before.
1. 4th & 6 at PHI 47 (0:01 – 3rd) B.Mann punts 48 yards to BLT 5, Center-R.Lovato, downed by PHI-K.Ringo.
Defense did their job holding Philly to a three-and-out after back-to-back missed field goals. And then Tylan Wallace completely castrated the offense, after this had already happened earlier in the game, because returning the kick was obviously never an option. This is what Sunday was, a special teams failure.
