Two men who were closest to Carmelo Anthony (Towson Catholic) during his childhood in Baltimore joined GCR Tuesday to discuss how the city shaped the future Hall of Famer’s incredible career.
Anthony considered former Coppin State and UMBC assistant coach Eric Skeeters to be his godfather and was close friends and high school teammates with current Archbishop Curley basketball coach Darnell Hopkins.
Among the topics both discussed were:
-What impact the city of Baltimore had on making a young man (born in Brooklyn) the NBA icon he ultimately became?
-When Anthony first showed signs of being special
-How did Anthony, who grew up in a very difficult part of the city, avoid the fate of falling to the streets the way so many young people in the city do?
-The impact leaving Towson Catholic for Oak Hill Academy had in preparing him for the next level
-Anthony modeling his game a bit after St. Frances legend Mark Karcher
